Meaning of Theism

Meaning of Theism - How Do People Define Theism?
The meaning of Theism is based on the belief in a god. Like atheism, there are many varieties of theism, but the common thread is a belief in one or more supernatural deities that exist both outside and within the world. Theism, like atheism, can be defended philosophically with varying degrees of success. However, unlike atheism, there is ample testable evidence for the proof of theism.

Meaning of Theism Key Observations
Order (God provides the best explanation for abstract notions, such as numbers, formulas and properties)

  • Causation (God provides the best explanation for the existence of the universe and all that is in it)
  • Design (God provides the best explanation for the complex order in cosmological and biological entities)
  • Morality (God provides the best explanation for the existence of objective moral/ethical values in the world).
In a simple nutshell, theism declares that (i) our finely-tuned universe was created by a First Cause out of nothing; (ii) the order, design, and complexity seen in life require an Intelligent Designer; (iii) our response to pain and suffering in the world is relative to our knowledge of good and evil resulting from a fallen creation; (iv) the Bible is a trustworthy and authoritative record of history based on science, archaeology, manuscripts, and prophecy; and (v) universal morality requires a transcendent standard. The theist would say all of these things point to God.
